My Yoga Journey

I AM a yogi. My motto in life since I can remember has been “Bloom Where You Are Planted.”
Back in 2008 when yoga was first introduced to me, I thought of it as something “neat” and perhaps something I could do when it fit my schedule. During that time in my life I referred to myself as a “runner girl”. My normal was running six miles a day, weightlifting, working full time, being a wife and mother, and the list goes on. I experienced what I call a “sprinkle” of yoga; I practiced when convenient but that was very little.
Fast forward to 2017; my running miles were declining and eventually I was diagnosed with arthritis in my left knee. Running was my “medicine” and it was coming to an end. How would I survive? How would my family? I needed to run to keep my sanity! I had to find a release and I began to immerse myself in practicing yoga and soon knew that this would be my next chosen “poison”. I purchased a spin bike, completely hung up my running shoes, and started seriously with my yoga practice. I took various classes at local yoga centers and soon realized I wanted to teach someday but also started making the connection between my day-to-day work and my work on the mat. I have practiced as a School Social Worker for almost 20 years, engaging with students, families and staff addressing their social emotional needs. In my journey to yoga, I learned that this work compliments what I have a passion to do which is help others connect their body to their mind.
In 2019, I found a yoga center (which has since unfortunately closed) that introduced me to Baptiste Yoga. I knew this practice and community was for me and I began practicing there whenever I had an opportunity. I felt truly accepted into a yoga community. I learned so much from the experienced and loving teachers and from various workshops and classes. One particular session, 40 days to Personal Revolution, taught me that yoga is not just about being on my mat but about how I am off my mat. Yoga is about living and being free of all those negative patterns, thoughts, and feelings. I also learned the beauty of meditation. As a part of my faith, I have always studied the bible and took refuge in quiet time but when I learned meditation, I felt like it was the icing on the cake.
On a whim and without much faith in my success, I applied for the
Yoga for Black Wellness on YogaPose through My Vinyasa Practice. Coincidentally I was awarded the opportunity during my summer break and my summer was filled with learning. My family who 100% supported my work benefited and we all began to practice together as well as being my “guinea pigs” for teaching and learning modifications. I will be forever indebted to Michelle Young and her vision to support African American yoga Instructors as well as my family. While becoming a registered yoga teacher, my intellect was challenged as well as my inner being.
I AM Belle Walker, YogiBelle, and I want to introduce you to yoga, walk with you as you continue your journey and guide you through self-exploration and possibilities that you can discover on your mat and off your mat. I strongly believe that yoga should be and can be accessible to all. Let me help you bloom right where you are planted!
